Bookbinding supplies

Here is a list of the tools and materials you will need to complete this project. You can order the supplies from the affiliate links below, or you can use what you have on hand.

Tools and materials

  1. Awl (sharp tool to poke holes in cardboard and paper)

  2. Bone folder (plastic knife-like tool for making clean sharp creases)

  3. straight needles (4): Leather needles Size 00 I like this brand because its sturdy and super sharp (minimize poking injury!)

  4. binder clips (1-2)

  5. Foam brush

  6. Scissors (any kind)

  7. PVA glue (-or acid free glue, about 1-2 ounces for one book)

  8. Waxed thread (about 22 feet total-this brand is thin enough to work with recommended needles)

  9. Book covers (2, chipboard, 9"x6") (option: Dick Blick Large sheet that you'll need to cut, but thicker)

  10. Cover paper (2" larger than cover in both dimensions, Lotka marble paper in this example, 2 pieces about ~11"x 8") -any decorativepaper

  11. Inner pages: mixed media paper 28 sheets (trim to 9"x 12"). I like Canson Mix Media-you'll need to trim off at the perforation

  12. End papers (2)- size of cover or smaller, can be decorative scrapbook paper, sheet of music, calendar pages, plain cardstock, etc.

  13. Waxed or parchment paper (3 sheets slightly larger than your cover)

  14. Punching guide: small piece of cardstock paper  (about 9"x 2") to make your hole punching guide

NOTE: You can alternatively order a kit like this-(Includes items 1-3,6,8)

Optional:

Quilter's ruler as seen used for making the hole punching guide --useful for cutting the covers too.

Self-healing cutting mat --useful when using a blade to cut, or have sheet of cardboard to protect your surface

Utility knife (I prefer a utility knife when cutting the heavy chipboard for covers)
