Nature journaling asks us to pay closer attention to the natural world by recording our observations on paper. We use words (descriptions, titles, questions), drawings (sketches, diagrams and other visual elements), and numbers (measurements, counts). It’s a practice that sharpens our awareness, deepens our knowledge and relationship with nature, and cultivates curiosity and a sense of wonder.

In these workshops, we’ll use drawing not as art, but as a learning tool — it’s a skill that everyone can learn with practice. When drawing, we’ll need to pay careful attention, honing our observation and drawing skills. As a result, we may begin to experience more of the world around us.

Nature journaling slows us down to the pace of nature, improves our memory, sparks creativity and cultivates a sense of joy — a calming counter-balance to a technology-filled life.

In this live interactive series, we’ll learn the foundations of nature journaling and practice with marine animals from our Bechtel Center for Ocean Education and Leadership.
